St. Joseph's Abbey: Spencer, Massachusetts

St. Joseph's Abbey is a monastery of the Catholic Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (O.C.S.O.), popularly known as the "Trappists", located in Spencer, Massachusetts.

The Abbey was founded in 1950 by Belgian and French Trappist monks from the Monastery of Our Lady of the Valley in Valley Falls, Rhode Island, which had burned to the ground. In the rustic hills of central New England, they established a new home in which to follow an age-old contemplative way of life.

The monastery became known internationally as the origin of the Centering Prayer movement, whose leading proponents were monks at the monastery: Fr. William Meninger, Fr. M. Basil Pennington and Fr. Thomas Keating.

Work has always been greatly esteemed in the Cistercian tradition, since it gives the monks the opportunity to follow in Christ' footsteps and share in His Divine work of creation and restoration. The monks produce products whose sale provides for their livelihood and for the care of the poor. Since the 1950s, they have produced Trappist Preserves, their popular line of jams and jellies. Since 1949, The Holy Rood Guild has created beautiful, finely-tailored liturgical vestments to enhance the dignity of the Sacred Liturgy.

I first bought the Trappist strawberry preserved when I lived in CT, in the early 1980s. They were the best I ever had. I would occasionally buy and enjoy other flavors but strawberry is still my favorite. I moved to FL about 5 years ago and local stores do not carry them, so, I buy them by the case over the internet. I enjoy them on toast, on crackers with PB, on crackers with cream cheese, on English muffins. Don't tell anyone, but I've also taken a spoonful right from the jar.

Almost like my mother's strawberry preserves

Unlike most commercial preserves there are lumps of strawberry which preserves should have. Since the Trappists use corn syrup as as well as cane sugar, it is a bit firm.

I've always enjoyed strawberry preserves and had tried many brands and home made. None are as good as Trappist. Since I moved away the local stores do not carry them but I'm able buy on line and have them shipped! Toast an English muffin, butter and preserves are a toast to the work of the monks.

Strawberry Preserves

I like that the first ingredient is Strawberry!! These are excellent preserves, went to the Monastery a few weeks ago and picked up a few varieties. that I haven't tried yet - still working on a jar of Strawberry. The bookstore by the front entrance carries them. Was sorry they didn't carry the Trappist Beer yet, but worth the trip for the preserves if you are near that area and they aren't in your grocery.

I like strawberry anything. I've bough many different strawberry preserves over the years but none come close to the Trappist in flavor or texture. I found them years ago and not that I moved away, I'm happy to be able to buy them on line. Just got my second case. I have them at least six days a week on toast or English muffin with breakfast Great with peanut butter.

If you want the best strawberry preserves, buy them at Monastery Greetings! I did, and was/am pleasantly and unexpectedly surprised by the difference between these and those provided by a different yet highly regarded "boutique" food purveyor. These are the best! Thank you, Monastery Greetings!

Can't be without them

When we moved to New England 37 years ago I discovered Trappist Preserves. I've been buying them ever since as they are the best tasting preserves, no matter the flavor. We recently moved to Florida and yes, I brought some with me but they were getting low. I ordered a case of Strawberry so my day can start right. Some days on buttered toast with eggs, other days with peanut butter toast. They are also nice between layers of a chocolate cake!
