For centuries, these cookies have been a Christmas tradition in Bavaria and Austria. After settling in America in the 19th century, Benedictine Sisters in Indiana preserved this craft, each year creating these hard-to-find cookies the Old World way. These anise-flavored cookies are made from a simple egg-and-flour dough, sweetened with sugar and honey. Using specially carved cookie molds, the Sisters press a variety of Christmas-inspired designs into the dough before baking. The result is a firm and tender cookie that is a perfect accompaniment to coffee, tea or your holiday egg nog. Each box contains one dozen cookies (about 2" long).

The Ferdinand Benedictines are one of the largest Benedictine communities of women in the United States -- over 100 members strong and thriving.

Monastery Immaculate Conception was founded in 1867 by four young Benedictine sisters who came to Ferdinand to teach the children of area settlers. More than 1,000 women have entered the community over the last 150+ years. They've expanded their ministries beyond education and beyond Ferdinand. Today, they serve as teachers, social workers, parish ministers, counselors, nurses, attorneys, youth ministers, administrators, entrepreneurs, activists, chaplains, librarians and more.

The history of Monastery Baked Goods is rooted in a love of baking among the sisters. In support of Christkindlmarkt, an annual German festival held in Ferdinand, the sisters started making and selling Springerle, a traditional German cookie. Today they produce a variety of cookies and other baked goods whose sales help to support their ministries.

The Best Cookies Ever

I almost cried with joy when I first opened the box and bit into one of these fabulous coolies!!! The taste was just as it had been for countless years when my mother made these, especially for me all during my childhood and even after I left home as an adult! I have never found them before, even at craft fairs, so I was delighted to see them offered by the Sisters. Vielen vielen Dank (thank you, thank you). I will be ordering them again!!! The aniseseed flavor is wonderful, and they have just the right consistency, and even though I'm blind, I can feel the pictures on top and make, I think, reasonable guesses as to what each picture is! Please, please, never stop baking them!! I plan to order other products, too, such as soap.

Brings back memories

These cookies brought back the times when my Grandmother made them. The only difference was that these cookies did not have anise seeds on the bottom of them; otherwise they looked like and tasted exactly like them and were they ever gooood.
